This hadith highlights the importance of mothers and tells us how necessary it is to try to keep one’s mother happy. The only situation in which a person is not required to obey their mother is if it entails disobedience to Allah (subhana wa ta’ala).
For example, if a mother wants her daughter to not dress Islamically then she would not obey her mother in this matter, but would still try her best to keep her mother happy with her. Or if a mother asked her son to deprive his wife of the rights Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) has ordained for her, then he would not obey his mother in this instance, but he would obey her in all other matters that did not involve disobedience to Allah (subhana wa ta’ala).
Allah, Mighty and Majestic, comes before all else. We do our best to obey Him and in doing so, obey those whom He asked us to obey after Him.
